Captain America: Civil War has proved it is king of the jungle and mightier than Superman at the Australian box office.

The American superhero film took in a whopping $13.961 million at the Aussie box office during its opening weekend, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Its debut was bigger than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which over the Easter weekend took in $13.156 million.

Captain America also managed to knock fellow Disney film The Jungle Book ($2.372 million) from its perch over the weekend, after the flick had reigned supreme in Aussie cinemas for two straight weeks.

Eddie The Eagle, the warm-hearted Hugh Jackman flick based on the real life story of the Olympic aerial ski jumper, dropped a spot to third, taking in $1.303 million.

Despite some poor reviews, Mother’s Day, starring Julia Roberts, entered the top 10 for the first time at fourth ($1.189 million) pushing Melissa McCarthy comedy film The Boss ($560,499) down to fifth.

Disney animated flick Zootopia ($502,795) dropped three spots to sixth.

Another new entry this week was Finding Mr Right 2, which generated $222,146 in box office revenue.

Eye In The Sky ($209,470) and Kung Fu Panda 3 ($186,031) rounded out the list at ninth and 10th, respectively.
