Tom Cruise has been confirmed for the long-awaited Top Gun sequel – and this time his ace fighter pilot character will be tackling drones.

Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison thrilled fans with the news while promoting the new Terminator movie in Berlin, Germany over the weekend.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology, and fifth-generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce, so it’s really (about) exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today,” Ellison said.

“We are very, very hopeful that we will get to make the movie very soon.”

The original 1986 movie featured Cruise as Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards. It was directed by the late Tony Scott.
