08-Melbourne Cup has lowest ever ratings

(Australian Associated Press)

For a race that stops the nation, only a little over two million people watched the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

Michelle Payne’s historic win aboard Prince Of Penzance attracted 2.068 million viewers, according to OzTAM’s five-metro city data.

It was about 60,000 viewers down on 2014 and the fewest number of viewers since OzTAM’s ratings started in 2001.

However, it was still the No.1 program on Tuesday ahead of the Cup Presentation and the Cup Mounting Yard coverage.

The 2012 Melbourne Cup was the most watched race in ratings history with 2.664 million viewers.
