Australians could soon see the footy finals in high definition after parliament lifted rules forcing the main free-to-air channels to broadcast lower quality vision.

The rules were a hangover from the nation’s switch to digital TV, when the main television channels were restricted to standard definition because not all set-top boxes could receive HD.

Legislation to allow the Seven, Nine and Ten networks plus public broadcasters ABC and SBS to use HD passed federal parliament on Wednesday, after a poll found 96 per cent of Australians had TVs capable of broadcasting the higher quality.
