Resources giant BHP Billiton has pledged $20 million for a knowledge centre in Canada’s Saskatchewan province to develop carbon capture and storage technologies.

BHP will partner with local electricity provider SaskPower for the project.

BHP has committed to spend the money over five years for the research centre in Regina, which will help develop low-emissions technologies necessary to limit the impact of climate change.

The global miner operates its potash business headquarters in the Saskatchewan, and is one of the world’s largest suppliers of coal.
